Ground station B.
Opened in 1972 with a single antenna, the site quickly expanded to five major antennas and now includes a number of buildings consisting of a large visitor center, substation and control rooms. The largest of these antennas is 35 meters high and 30 meters in diameter. There are also a number of smaller antennas around the site.
I believe some Belgian visitors may recognize this site as it was a popular destination for school trips and used to cater for 150,000 visitors a year, now it rests in silence.
The site was closed in 2001 due to advanced technology such as GSM and cable. After closure, the site served a number of purposes, including a technology training center for the unemployed. In 2007, an Indian broadcaster acquired the site to broadcast Indian television channels to Africa, they eventually ran into financial difficulties and marketed the telecommunications center. Since then I believe it has remained abandoned.
The site was purchased by an investor in late 2016, but I am not sure about their plans to be submitted to the municipality sometime in 2017.
Status: available
